Oban/East Kilbride/Aberdeen

I’m out and about over the next few weeks, Oban on Sat 29 Oct, East Kilbride Sat 5 & Sun 6 Nov & Aberdeen Sat 12 Nov, so maybe see you at one or the other (or the other).

Oban Comic Con

Two interesting (it’s all relative) facts about Oban is that the Oban Colosseum (known as McCaig’s Folly) turns up in Calhab Justice. Also, the story I scripted for Star Trek Manga was called ‘Oban’. Although with the latter, Oban was the name of a shape changing alien.

Date is Saturday 29th October. Time is 10am-4pm. Venue is The Corrans Hall. Details here:

East Kilbride Comic Con

The BGCP Comic Con takes over East Kilbride Shopping Centre the first weekend of November.  The event is taking over both floors. I’ll be on the top floor.

Dates are Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th November. Time both days is 10am-4pm. Details here:

Aberdeen Comic Con

Last time I was in Aberdeen I spent a lovely evening with the late Alan Grant, so it’ll be a poignant moment coming back.

Date is Saturday 12th November. Time is 10am-4pm. Venue is Beach Leisure Centre. Details here:

Unreliable narrator/Galashiels/Waverley Market (Edinburgh)

I discuss some of my favourite novels with Shepherd books, which feature an unreliable narrator. This is where the main protagonist tells the story, but from their own warped point of view, so not always to be trusted. What can I say I’m a sucker for a skewered point of view. My list consists of The Wasp Factory, The Demon, American Psycho, The Killing Joke, and Lolita.

You can read all about them here:

https://shepherd.com/best-books/unreliable-narrators

I’m on my travels in October, Galashiels on the 1st and Waverley Market, Edinburgh on the 15th and 16th:

Galashiels Comic Con

I’m off to the Borders on Saturday. Galashiels Comic Con is on Saturday 1st October. Venue is Volunteer Halls, St John St, Galashiels, TD1 3JX. I’ll be there 10am-4pm.

Details here:

Waverley Market Comic Con (Edinburgh)

I don’t need much encouragement (if any) to take a trip to Edinburgh and I’ll be doing so on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th of October. Venue is Waverly Market, which is right next to Waverley Train Station. Time for both days is 10am-5pm.

Details here:

Come and get an early Xmas present for you and your loved ones. A signed novel/graphic novel? What’s not to like? Hope to see you at one or the other.

Jim Alexander roadshow (Loch Lomond/Perth)/book offer

I’m off on my travels to two beautiful parts of Scotland. The whole of Scotland is beautiful to be honest. I know I shouldn’t play favourites, but…

I have a table at Loch Lomond Comic Con (Sat 30 & Sun 31 July) and Perth Comic Con (Sat 6 August). Maybe see you at one or both?

Loch Lomond Comic Con

I’ll be at Loch Lomond Comic Con on the last weekend of July. It’s taking place on Loch Lomond Shores and is an outside event, so if you’re going prepare for the 22 seasons of Scottish weather! Time is 10am-4pm, both Sat 30 & Sun 31 July. Full details can be found here:

Perth Comic Con

Saturday 6th August will see the launch of the inaugural Perth Comic Con. Time is 10am-4pm and the location is Dewars Centre on Glover Street. VisitScotland describes Perth thus; ‘the city is laced with gorgeous city architecture, unrivalled surrounding landscapes and an intriguing royal history.’ And it has a Comic Con!

Buy one of my novels, get the graphic novel Savant for free

Continuing the offer: if you order one of my novels (GoodCopBadCop, Good Cop, or the Light) we’ll throw in a copy of my new graphic novel Savant for free. The offer covers both physical and digital copies.

You can place an order for one of my novels at the Planet Jimbot shop on Etsy (and we’ll make sure Savant is included). As an added bonus, I’m happy to sign and personalise the books:

Podcast/NerdyGirl/Ayr/Edinburgh

I was a guest of a podcast. Not any old podcast, but a Brewgooders podcast; one that chats about beer and comics. I spoke with Geoff, Colin, Andrew and Dave and as you might expect there was lots of random chat. I even managed to combine the two, beer and comics, by asking what’s the connection with the beer Schiehallion and one of my stories? All is revealed here:

The Brewgooders Episode 134: Special Guest Jim Alexander

Available on podomatic:

and Apple:

and all those other places where podcasts are available.

In other news, there is more love for Savant, this time from Katherine Kleffner of TheNerdyGirlExpress. In her review, commenting on the lead character, she says, ‘I love her character design and honestly kept wondering how she would look translated to the screen.’

You and me both Katherine 😊 You can read the whole review here:

I’ll also be out and about at the start of June, starting with being a guest at Ayr Comic Con on Saturday 4th June.

Time: 10am-4pm

Venue:  Ayr Citadel Leisure Centre, South Harbour St, KA7 1JB

Details here:

I’m not done that weekend as I’ll be at the Creators Hall on Sunday 5th June for Cymera in Edinburgh. Cymera is Scotland’s Festival of Science-Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Writing, and is really worth a visit. Events are ticketed but the Creators Hall (where I’ll be all day Sunday) is free entry.

Time: 10am-5pm

Venue:  The Pleasance, 60 Pleasance, Edinburgh, EH8 9TJ

Reviews for Savant/Greenock Comic Con

Reviews for Savant are in. John Freeman of Down the Tubes says, “For me, Savant is one of Jim Alexander’s best SF stories.”

Emerald Book Reviews says, “Highly recommended and a well-deserved five stars from me.” While David Higgins says on his blog, “Under the joyously full-on aesthetic is an emotionally complex plot on the madness of war reminiscent of classics such as Conrad’s Heart of Darkness.”

Perhaps the pick of the bunch is from Michael Lennox of BGCP who says, “This comic is operatic in scale and depth with emotional troughs and action peaks that leave you breathless at the end.” You can read the whole review here:

Savant is available here:

New book from Marvel/Paisley Book Festival/Cumbernauld Comic Con

Plenty of things going on, so without further ado:

Ororo: Before the Storm

Out today

It’s no small thing being part of a Marvel book these days. I occupy the tiniest corner of the Marvel Universe and contribute a story recounting how an orphaned, abandoned child named Ororo became the goddess Storm of the X-Men. Called ‘The Song of Storm’, this isn’t its first outing. In fact, I wrote it some time ago, but I grow prouder of this story with every passing year. The book is released today, 15th February 2022.

Paisley Book Festival

Tues 22 Feb, 6-7pm

Just a wee reminder that I’m appearing at Paisley Central Library on Mill Street on the evening of the 22nd February. The library is located next to the Lagoon Leisure Centre, or as I like to call it ‘The Creature from the Black Lagoon Leisure Centre’. Tickets are £8/£6 and I’ll be joined by writer Seamus Connolly. There will be readings, anecdotes, a Q&A, what’s not to like?

Tickets available here:

Cumbernauld Comic Con

Sat 26 Feb, 10am-4pm

I’m a guest at the Cumbernauld Comic Con, which will take place on the last Saturday in February. Come on by and say hello. There are free tickets available via the website.
